Mrs. Ophelia Poindexter

Listen to Obituary

Mother Ophelia Marie Chilton Poindexter was born in Oakwood, Montgomery County, Tennessee, to Jessie James “Jim” Chilton and Sallie Lasco (Horn) Chilton. She was one of nine siblings and was predeceased by her beloved parents; her brothers Mervin, Jesse, and Charles Edward; and her sisters Cecile Louise Eldridge Hunter, Ella B. Moss, Rosa Baynes and Lorene Overton.

From a young age, Ophelia devoted her life to Christ, beginning her spiritual journey at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Oakwood, where she served faithfully alongside her family. She cherished attending church events, especially the annual Second Sunday in August Homecoming.

Ophelia fondly recalled her early education at Griffey School, thriving in its close-knit community and building lasting friendships that continued as she attended the historic Burt High School. A defining influence in her youth was her teacher and mentor, Mrs. Flora Bowen Richbourg, who encouraged Ophelia to strive for excellence in all areas—academically, artistically, and personally. Under her guidance, Ophelia developed a passion for learning and skills in singing, sewing, and public speaking.

On March 3, 1956, Ophelia married Leroy Poindexter of Woodlawn, Tennessee. Together, they were blessed with five children: Rockelle, Darcel, Ryan, Leroy, and Brenay. She joined Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church in Woodlawn, where she served wholeheartedly in countless roles until Leroy’s passing in 1997.

Her devotion to family and community was steadfast. Ophelia served as a missionary, in pastoral ministry, as church secretary, and on both the culinary and vacation Bible school committees. After graduating from Hughes Beauty College, she became a junior cosmetology instructor and opened her own home salon, offering beauty services and warm conversation to all. Generous with her time, she also volunteered at Woodlawn Elementary School’s infirmary, trained as a nurse’s aide, and supported a nursing home in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

A lifelong learner, Ophelia studied sociology and political science at Austin Peay State University while working full-time for the Tennessee Department of Human Services until her retirement. Deeply involved in her faith, she organized and presented at many Christian programs, painted biblical murals, and was an active member of numerous organizations, including Toastmasters International—a particular favorite where she honed and shared her passion for public speaking. Additionally, Ophelia wrote poetry, which reflected her deep faith and keen insight into life’s experiences.

Ophelia was preceded in death by her infant son, Ryan Udell. After Leroy’s passing, she moved her membership to Word of Life Ministries C.O.G.I.C. in Clarksville, Tennessee, where she continued to serve faithfully, participating in the culinary committee, Mothers Board, and other ministries, always supported by her children.

On Friday, August 1, 2025, Mother Ophelia Marie Chilton Poindexter answered God’s call, entering into eternal rest and the joy of her Father.

She is lovingly remembered by her children: Leroy Darron (Stacie) Poindexter, Rockelle (Frank) Coffey, Jr., Darcel Coles, and Brenay Poindexter, all of Clarksville, TN; her grandchildren: Karmen (Terrence) Decosta-Saxton, Atlanta, GA, Jhari Coles, Nashville, TN, Alijah Poindexter, New York, and Israel Poindexter, Clarksville, TN; her sweet baby sister, Nancy Christine (Edward) Anderson; sisters-in-law: Annie P. Jones, Chicago, IL and Clara Griffey Poindexter, Hopkinsville, KY; as well as her cherished lifelong friends: Matilda Fletcher and Linda White. Also mourning her loss are a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

Her legacy of faith, service, deep friendship, and steadfast love will forever remain in the hearts of all she touched
