James was born on Tuesday, June 28, 1949, son to Jasper R. Holmes and Margie Wilson Holmes in Clarksville, Tennessee. His parents and brother, Bobby Lee Holmes preceded him in death.

He received his formal education in the Montgomery County School System where he was a standout football player and graduate of the Historic Burt High School, Class of 1967. He enjoyed employment with Quebecor as a tech operator and retired in 2010 after many years of dedicated service.

On Friday, December 30, 1983, James united in holy matrimony with, Venita Long.

Affectionately known as “Sweet Cake,” he loved spending time with family and friends. As an avid sports enthusiast, he enjoyed watching his favorite sports teams: Tennessee Titans, Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Vols and New York Yankees baseball, win or lose. He also enjoying grilling out and just sitting on the front porch. All who knew and loved him will sorely miss his presence and signature smile.

On Sunday, July 26, 2026, James departed this life to be with the Lord.

He leaves to cherish precious memories his; wife Venita Holmes; daughters: Kyatina Bowie, Brittney Holmes, both of Clarksville TN, and Erica (Rick) Darr, Spring Hill, TN; son, Antonio (Kendra) Holmes, Oak Grove, MO; grandchildren: Shacorey Osborne, Makiyah Boyd and Johnathan Bowie; sister-in-law, Vonda Brown, Lithonia, GA, nephew, Bobby Holmes, Jr., and a host of other relatives and friends.
